This was my first go on InDesign, i used photos we were given on the shared area to create a practice double page spread.

Magazine Front Cover Evaluation

  • Does your front cover successfully attract  your target audience?

I believe my front cover attracts my target audience as i have handed out some prints of the finished cover and had back positive comments and how they would like to see a double page spread. I am very pleased with the cover and believe that the cover shows the genre of music i have chosen clearly and the title of the magazine helps the reader to see the genre. I also believe that the front cover attracts the readers as i have used quit bright could allowing the cover to be eye catching.

  • Which forms and conventions does your magazine cover follow?
  1. Dominating image which is the centre-piece of the magazine and very clear, I also created an image mask allowing the image to stand out more clearly.
  2. Links to other articles which are clear to see.
  3. Teasing Contents; making the customer want to read the magazine and therefore enticing him/her to do that.
  4. List of artists and other information the magazine contains (magazine footer).
  5. Masthead covered slightly by the main image but allowing the audience to identify the magazine brand.

My magazine follows the forms and conventions of everyday music magazine showing clearly the contents, masthead, footer and bold image. All of this gives the reader a clear understanding of the genre and what it will contain.

  • Does it follow the style of your chosen magazine genre?

My magazine front cover does show the style of my magazine genre. I believe this as the prints that i handed out were recognized as being UK hip-hop or UK grime, i have also created a tag line UK’s Finest giving the reader an instant idea of the magazine genre. I have sub headings describing the content of the magazine for example information about artists and interviews along with a competition about tickets to a concert, allowing the reader to know what genre the magazine is. The title of the magazine is Stayfresh which is also slang giving the reader an instant idea of grime or UK hip-hop.

  • Does it challenge or subvert any convention?

I believe my magazine does not challenge or subverts any conventions as my magazine cover follows most music magazines. I believe i may have challenged a convention with the amount of colours i have used on the front cover. Apart from that i believe my magazine does not challenge any forms and conventions.

  • How are your front cover models represented?

My front cover model represents a street artist, as i got him to wear an Adidas hoodie and pose. From just looking at the front cover main image you would gain an idea of what the magazine would be on. I used a pupil of Sheldon School in the year 13 called Josh Archer. I chose to use him as he was already into the genre of music and already new how to pose and what to wear for a UK hip-hop and grime magazine. I am very pleased with the front cover image and how it represents the genre.

  • Does the cover set up a double-page spread articles?

I believe the front cover does set up for a double-page spread as i have placed information about the an up and coming artist ARCHER all over the front cover giving the reader a reason to look inside. I also showed the finished front cover to some other students asking their opinion on weather they would want to read the double-page spread after seeing the front cover, all the responses were positive. This gave me conformation that the front cover does set up for the double-page spread.
